EKAM Story

“ I strongly believe that we need to do service (SEWA) with pure intention and unconditionality”

~ Dr. Sailakshmi Balijepally

Dr. Sailakshmi Balijepally, a gifted pediatrician, began her career in government hospitals, where she was confronted with the stark inequalities of the healthcare system. Her daily encounters involved breaking the heart-wrenching news to parents that their children needed critical, often costly medical interventions, in the face of their struggle to provide even basic necessities like three meals a day.

Her journey was marked by witnessing the harrowing impact of healthcare inefficiencies, where preventable deaths of children were a grim and routine reality, and hospitals were swamped beyond capacity. It was a world where sick children were often found on floors, and essential resources like staffing, medications, and life-saving equipment were woefully inadequate.

Unwilling to accept this as the norm, Dr. Sai founded the EKAM Foundation in 2009. Driven by the unwavering belief that no child should be denied healthcare due to financial constraints or other barriers, EKAM has evolved into a formidable global non-profit. Its mission is to transform pediatric and maternal health in the poorest regions of India, striving to make healthcare inclusive, accountable, and effective.
